Artist Background

Candice Fuhrman recently retired from a 50-year career in book publishing, working as an editor, writer, book packager and literary agent.  As head of her eponymous literary agency she focused on discovering and nurturing writers of both fiction and nonfiction.  A lifelong appreciator of art, she began painting in 2017 and studied with several Bay Area artists.  Over the years, her work has been shown at numerous local businesses and was selected for a juried exhibition at the Belvedere-Tiburon Library.

Artist Statement

My work is about finding rough beauty in the homely.  For many years now I have been experimenting with unconventional materials.  I like seeing how I can manipulate the material to create my art.  I’m fascinated by the varieties of shapes, surfaces, and textures that are possible.

I begin with the blank slate and play with the material until something begins to emerge. Each piece presents a different challenge. I’ve painted, glued, ripped, cut and even set several on fire. I’ve added packing paper, eucalyptus seeds, bark, cement, and paper plates.  I work and rework a piece until it seems “done.”

I love working with cardboard for its versatility, fragility and roughness.  There are no perfect surfaces or edges. But it’s not precious; it is up for whatever challenge I bring to it. But ultimately, no matter what material I’m using, I’m interested in the creative process and the manifestation of something out of infinite possibility.
